Racetams

8 compounds in this category

Racetams are a family of synthetic compounds sharing a pyrrolidone nucleus, developed from the 1960s onwards. They modulate AMPA and NMDA glutamate receptors and are among the oldest synthetic nootropics. The class includes piracetam (the original), and increasingly potent derivatives.

Caution

Racetams deplete acetylcholine, which causes headaches in many users. A choline source (Alpha-GPC or citicoline) is widely recommended as a companion. Individual response varies significantly across the racetam family.

Good to Know

Each racetam has a distinct profile despite the shared core structure. Piracetam is mild and requires high doses. Phenylpiracetam is stimulating and builds tolerance. Aniracetam is fat-soluble and anxiolytic. Choosing the right one depends on the desired effect.
